You don’t have to pay council tax until you are 18.
After that, you pay no council tax if you’re on Income Support or
Jobseeker’s Allowance.
If you are on a low income you can claim council tax reduction.

If you’re on JSA or IS there are special funds available to help
you, if you can prove you need them.
If you live with your parents they can claim these things for you.
There are free prescriptions and dental treatment for people:
- under 16
- getting Income Support or income-based Jobseekers’ Allowance
- or pregnant
- or had a baby in the last year
If you’re on IS or income-based JSA, you might be able to claim:
- fares to hospital
- free sight tests
- vouchers for glasses
- free vitamins
- Healthy Start vouchers for milk, fruit and veg.
- and perhaps free school meals
