The next 5 pages are full of helpful advice and tips on how to keep your baby safe
Some healthy babies have suffered from ’cot death’.
But it's rare. Here's how to reduce the risks to your baby.

Make it a habit from the start.
Sleeping on the back is safer than on the
side.
It’s OK for baby to roll over at about 5 or 6
months.
But if you find baby on its front, gently turn it over.
You don’t need to keep checking through the night.
It’s actually good for them to experience different positions and
movements.
You can let them lie on their tummies to play during the day.
If their heads are accidentally covered with bedding they're at an increased risk of cot death. Sleep baby on a clean, firm, flat, well-fitting mattress. The outside of it should be waterproof. Cover it with a single sheet. Use sheets and lightweight blankets, not duvets, baby nests, wedges or pillows. |
Risk of cot death increases if people smoke near babies. Make smokers go outside. If you need help to give up smoking call the NHS Pregnancy Smoking Helpline.
Talking to them and cuddling them makes them happy. |
