I’m Going to Have a Baby

Crying is baby´s way of letting you know how they feel. They don´t do it to upset you - ever.

Check first if they're just thirsty, hungry or tired, or need changing.

They might want a cuddle. You won´t ‘spoil´ them. Babies need affection as much as they need food and drink.

Rock baby gently in a pram or cradle. Walk up and down with baby in your arms or a sling. Sing a lullaby or play some gentle music.

If the crying is not normal for your baby, consult the health visitor, or doctor.

Keep calm. It’s not personal.

Take deep breaths and let it out slowly.

Put baby somewhere safe, like a cot.

Go into another room and sit down for a few minutes.

Have a cup of tea, watch the TV or listen to the radio to take your mind off it.

When you feel calm, go back.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a friend or neighbour.

Getting angry only makes things worse.
