I’m Going to Have a Baby

If you can’t live at home, you’ll need advice and help on housing.

Although councils have a responsibility to house people, getting somewhere suitable can be very difficult and complicated if you're under 18.

If you’re stuck, you can get help from the Housing Advice Team (See Who Else Can Help?) or the Family Homeless Team.

You might need to go in very quickly, so have a plan. As early as possible, have a bag ready with things you´ll need when you go into hospital. What clothes will you need to take?

Remember, you'll need clothes for you and for taking baby home, too. You might want to take a book or a magazine.

Make sure you've got money for a pay phone, as you can’t use mobile phones in hospital. You may want to take a list of phone numbers for family and friends.

Have things ready for when baby gets home: Cot, clothes, baby bedding, bottles and steriliser (if you're not breastfeeding), nappies etc.

If you think you're going into labour, or your waters have broken, ring the hospital where you're due to give birth. Ask to speak to a midwife. Or call your midwife direct, if you have her number. She'll advise you what to do next.

If you think you are about to deliver - you feel you want to push or you're bleeding - it's more urgent. So, call an ambulance right away.

If you have any concerns at all, talk to the midwife about them.
