I’m Going to Have a Baby

Who should you tell?

First, you need to tell a person who’ll be supportive and helpful, perhaps a friend, family member, or a teacher you trust. You may want to tell your parents, the baby's father, school, your friends and relatives.

The stress of telling people can get worse the longer you leave it. Get it over with as soon as you can. Then you can get on with all the planning and sorting things out.

Pick a good time – not when they’re tired or in a rush.

It helps to think out what you’ll say in advance. Perhaps a friend will help you rehearse?

If you find it really hard to say it face-to- face, what about phoning up, or writing a note? Whatever helps you.

Your family may be upset at first, but they can be a good source of support and help.

If you’re working, find out about rights and benefits from a local Jobcentre Plus (see Jobcentres under Who Else Can Help?) or a Children’s Centre (call 0800 085 2022 for your nearest) or One Parent Families free national helpline, 0800 018 5026, 9-5 Mon-Fri.
