FIGHT OR FLIGHT
I’m worried about telling
the baby’s father I’m
pregnant. What if he
thinks I’m trying to trap
him? What if he won’t
have anything to do with
me and the baby?
You can’t predict how
he’ll react. He may say
he wants to live with
you. He may even deny
his involvement. Get
help with talking to the
dad from your parents, a
social worker or Connexions. Remember,
the dad will find the
experience difficult too.
UNWANTED ADVICE
I think the baby’s father
wants to take over. Can
he keep telling me how
to look after my baby?
If he wants to be
involved in decisions
about his child, that
could be a good thing for
the child, as long as the
decisions are made in a
responsible way. Talk to
him about it, he is your
baby´s dad.

CONTACT
My boyfriend keeps
turning up and demanding to see
the baby. I don´t want
him to have anything to
do with us, but he says
he can anyway. Is he
right?
Yes, and no. He can apply for a contact order allowing him to see his child. Think about it though. Surely it´s best if you can agree about it, and have fixed times for him to see his child? Get help with this from
your Connexions PA or
ask at the CAB.
REGISTRATION
We’re not married but I
want to make sure that
the baby’s dad is on the
birth certificate. Is that
OK?
If you register the baby together, the dad´s name will go on the birth certificate. That way,
he´ll automatically have parental responsibility. If |
he can´t go with you and you both want him to have parental responsibility, you´ll need to complete a Parental
Responsibility Agreement. This means that baby´s dad is taking full responsibility with you for important decisions affecting your
child. Ask the Registrar for help.
