You should take folic acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It’s free on prescription from your GP or you can buy it from a supermarket or chemist. Green veg has lots of folic acid, too.
Start healthy eating right away. It gives the energy
pregnant mums need and gets baby off to a great start.
You should have:
- lots of fresh fruit and veg
- plenty of starchy food like potatoes, pasta, rice and cereals
- food with calcium in like milk, green veg, sardines or tofu
- lots of iron from red meat and fortified breakfast cereals
- plenty of fluid, to avoid constipation – 8-12 glasses a day of water or similar. Not too much tea or coffee though, and NO alcohol
