I’m Going to Have a Baby

I need furniture; can I get help with this?

If you are getting IS or income-based JSA you should claim a Community Care Grant. If you've been getting IS or income based JSA for at least 26 weeks you could claim a Budgeting Loan.

You may also be able to claim from local charities for household items. It's usually best to ask a professional adviser (Connexions for example) to apply on your behalf.

Who pays the bills?

Before you move in ask your landlord which bills you are responsible for and whether any are included in the rent.

Remember, HB won't cover the cost of bills even if they're included in the rent, so you'll have to pay these out of your own money.

There are several ways to pay gas and electricity bills. Ask about these when you move in. Bills are usually paid every three months but you may be asked to pay in advance, or to pay a deposit. You can pay your bills by monthly direct debit from a bank account, or buy stamps each week or use a card meter or have money taken directly from your IS/JSA.

Check with your gas and electricity companies to find out what options are available and which one's best for you.
